TMS Therapy

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or TMS Therapy, is a recent breakthroughs in treating a number of mental health conditions that do not respond to medication or talk therapy. TMS is a safe and non-invasive procedure, performed on an outpatient basis. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation therapy is beneficial because it is both highly effective and very safe, along with having very low side effects.

How TMS Therapy Works

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation therapy uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. By targeting specific parts of the brain associated with mood control, TMS treatment can reduce the symptoms of some mental illnesses, such as depression, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), anorexia, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). TMS treatment is especially effective for treatment-resistant depression or OCD, with high long-term success rates of remission.

Before starting a TMS therapy at our Delray Beach clinic, our clients undergo an initial evaluation, followed by an initial brain-mapping session, to determine the best targeting strategy for magnetic stimulation. During TMS sessions, headgear containing a specialized electromagnetic coil is placed on the patients scalp near the forehead, to focus on trouble areas in the brain like the lateral prefrontal cortex. At the office of Raul J. Rodriguez, MD, our psychiatrists are certified deep TMS providers, and we utilize the most advanced Brainsway® technology, the only TMS therapy approved for treating OCD as well as depression. The repetitive magnetic pulses used in TMS stimulate the nerve cells in the brain, promoting healthy brain activity. The process is painless, and does not involve direct electrical currents like electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). The stimulation of underperforming nerve cells through TMS treatment improves cognitive functioning, depressive symptoms, and has other mental health benefits.

Raul J. Rodriguez, MD is a provider in Delray Beach of deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (dTMS), a more deeply penetrating form of TMS therapy only possible with the newer generation of Brainsway® TMS technology. Deep TMS is more effective than standard TMS, because it produces a magnetic pulse that stimulates a larger part of the brain. In addition, the magnetic pulses produced by the H1 & H7 coils used in Deep TMS also penetrate into the brain deeper than standard TMS, thus producing more of a response in the axon of our brain cells. The larger, more penetrative pulses found with Deep TMS not only stimulate the target area in the brain (like the lateral prefrontal cortex) but also stimulate the neighboring parts of the brain which interconnect with the target area.

“The end result of deep TMS therapy is a higher rate in both response and remission of treatment-resistant depression and treatment-resistant OCD”

– Dr Raul J. Rodriguez, MD

In order to experience the maximum benefit of TMS, patients must receive a series of sessions, which are short in duration (approximately 20 minutes) and can be done without great interruption to work, school, or family life. The lack of side effects also ensures that patients can continue on with their lives while receiving treatment. Patients at Dr. Rodriguez’s deep TMS treatment center in Delray Beach can receive Deep TMS as a standalone treatment, or can combine it with our depression treatment program, which includes holistic treatments, psychiatric care, and intensive individual therapy.
