Dialectical Behavior Therapy
Dialectical Behavior Therapy, often referred to as DBT, is highly effective in the treatment of many psychiatric conditions, including Major Depression and Borderline Personality Disorder. DBT therapy is widely accepted as a best-practice course of treatment for BPD and other mental health disorders, due to its success rate and evidence-based approach to healing. Variations of DBT treatment for both addiction and eating disorders have also demonstrated strong, positive results.
At Raul J. Rodriguez MD & Associates, we offer Dialectical Behavior Therapy for all levels, from beginners up to advanced practitioners. Dr. Rodriguez’s DBT program offers flexible scheduling, so everyone can fit DBT therapy into their everyday lives. Our DBT Skills Groups help clients learn and apply the necessary tools to decrease both emotional deregulation and unhealthy reactions to difficult emotions. Our DBT groups are highly structured, and clients are required to make a full commitment to the entire course of therapy sessions.
Skills Covered in DBT Group:
Dialectical Behavior Therapy skill-sets are divided between four key modules, which are all covered during the course of our full DBT program. In DBT treatment, clients learn skills in individual skills-training sessions, and then practice them in our skills-group setting. Additional support, such as phone coaching, is available to help with the implementation of DBT skills in the real world. The DBT program at Raul J. Rodriguez MD & Associates covers these four modules:
Mindfulness:
Group participants are taught how to observe, describe, and then participate in emotions, sensations, thoughts, and external phenomenon. This is done without passing judgment on these experiences as either “good” nor “bad.” Mindfulness training is essential to develop skills that are necessary for successful progression in the DBT program.
Interpersonal Effectiveness:
DBT group members are taught how to more successfully express and assert their needs, and learn how to constructively resolve conflicts in their personal relationships. They learn how to process their thoughts in order to address other with both confidences and from a fair viewpoint.
Emotional Regulation:
Emotional regulation skills allow participants to identify and modulate their emotional reactions in healthier and more adaptive ways. Participants in DBT therapy learn a variety of effective self-regulation tools. These emotional regulation strategies help to prevent extreme emotional reactions to people or events. They also help to replace maladaptive coping mechanisms, like self-harm, process addictions, or other ineffective behaviors.
Distress Tolerance:
Participants are taught skills that enable them to accept and endure emotional distress without having to resort to self-destructive and maladaptive behaviors. Included in the DBT module are techniques for self-soothing, as well as skills involving breath-work and muscle relaxation. Participants learn how to navigate emotional crises in a healthy manner.
